Electrification is Coming
California is leading the charge to a carbon-free future being the first state in the nation to pass legislation mandating a 40% reduction of statewide greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and aiming to be 100% carbon-free by 2045. As a result, the state is mandating the electrification of all homes to reduce these emissions.
Electrification refers to the process of replacing technologies that use fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) with technologies that use electricity as a source of energy.
What does this mean for homeowners?
Brace yourself for change at home – effective 2030, gas appliances will be banned for purchase in the state of California. This includes heater and furnace sales, as well as gas-powered kitchen appliances.
Will homeowners be required to replace their current appliances by 2030?
They will not be required to replace their existing appliances. However, starting in 2030, any homeowner who needs to replace a gas furnace, water heater or other gas-powered home appliance in California will only have options for electric models. New-build homes will have to install all electric furnaces, water heaters and appliances. That’s why it’s important that homeowners be aware of this upcoming change now, so they can plan and prepare when it comes to their own home.
